  1. As a young high school student, I read a book that changed me. Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country drew a heart-rending, poignantly beautiful picture of South Africa’s effects of what would become apartheid on two families. I could not return to not caring about social justice issues. So I tie my reflections on the death of Nelson Mandela to this great book as I rejoice over the changes this great man led his nation and the world to, as I rejoice over his nation’s celebration of this noble human being, and as I rejoice over his entry into the the kingdom of saints.
